Guides / First boot
First boot & install
Boot the flashed stick on the PC that will become LocalOne, finish the setup wizard, then install to the internal disk. Install to disk wipes the target drive (fresh GPT + LVM) and copies the live system with rsync — it is not a block clone of the USB.
Hardware checklist
- UEFI firmware (legacy BIOS / CSM off preferred)
- USB stick inserted; if the box has Ethernet, plug it in (skips Wi‑Fi setup when DHCP works)
- An internal disk LocalOne can own (typically NVMe). Everything on that disk will be erased during install.
1. Boot from USB (UEFI)
- Power on and open the firmware boot menu (common keys:
F12,F10,F7,Esc, orF2/Delfor Setup → Boot). - Choose the USB entry under UEFI (not “Legacy”). The volume label is often
LOCALONEUSB. - If the menu only offers “Boot from file”, pick
EFI/BOOT/BOOTX64.EFIon the stick.
Secure Boot: leave it on when your image is signed for it. If the machine refuses the stick, temporarily disable Secure Boot, finish install, then re-enable and report the issue — shipping images are meant to boot with Secure Boot on.
2. Reach the setup wizard
Path A — Ethernet with DHCP
If a cable gets a lease and default route, LocalOne may skip the setup hotspot. Open a browser on another device to the appliance address shown on a connected display, or try http://localone.local / the printed IP.
Path B — LocalOne-Setup Wi‑Fi
- On your phone or laptop, join the Wi‑Fi network named LocalOne-Setup (open / captive-portal style).
- Open the captive portal or go to
http://192.168.4.1(typical AP gateway — use whatever the portal shows if different). - Follow the wizard: admin account, hostname, then home Wi‑Fi if needed.
3. Install to disk
- In the setup UI choose Install to disk (or the storage / install step that lists internal disks).
- Select the target (e.g.
nvme0n1). Confirm you understand it will be wiped. - Wait for progress: partition → LVM (
localone-vg) → rsync → GRUB/EFI. Do not power off. - When finished, remove the USB stick and reboot so the machine boots from the internal disk.
After reboot you should land in the LocalOne dashboard or remaining setup — not a GRUB rescue shell. If you get a GRUB shell or twin volume-group errors, see Troubleshooting.
What install does (for the curious)
# Conceptual — runs on the appliance during Install to disk
# wipe target → GPT (EFI + boot + LVM)
# vgcreate localone-vg → root/swap LVs → rsync / → grub-install
# New filesystem UUIDs (not a dd of the USB onto NVMe)Next: Wi‑Fi and updates · Install apps
